Plant Experiment - Teacher Notes

Rationale:

This activity is designed to have students investigate the effect of changes to the environment on organisms. It mirrors Jillian's research as it demonstrates changes in the environment. This activity also helps students to further their skills in designing and completing scientific experiments.

Curriculum Links:

Science Understanding:

- Multicellular organisms rely on coordinated and interdependent internal systems to respond to changes to their environment (VCSSU117)

Science Inquiry Skills:

- Formulate questions or hypotheses that can be investigated scientifically, including identification of independent, dependent and controlled variables (VCSIS134)

- Analyse patterns and trends in data, including describing relationships between variables, identifying inconsistencies in data and sources of uncertainty, and drawing conclusions that are consistent with evidence (VCSIS138)

Learning Intentions:

Students will be able to:

  • Plan and construct an experiment that tests changes in the environment.

  • Use experimental data to identify trends for changes in the environment of plants.

  • Articulate the trends in paragraph form.

Success Criteria:

Students will demonstrate their ability to design the experiment through a scientific poster in which they will need to provide and aim and answer some discussion questions.

Assessment Strategies:

Summative assessment in the form of a scientific poster. Students will need to present their practical report in the form of a scientific poster. Materials and method will be provided to the students, but students will need to present the aim hypothesis, variables and the discussion on the poster.

Criteria:
Please see GTAC’s rubric for assessing scientific posters - https://www.gtac.edu.au/critically-evaluating-scientific-posters/
